Indicator Overview: Long Breakout & Short Breakdown Setups
Summary: This indicator assists traders in capturing potential trends with both long and short setups by marking breakout and breakdown levels. It reduces risk by recommending patience before entry, especially after initial signals, and provides clear target levels for profit-taking. The use of breakout and breakdown confirmation levels helps avoid early entries during short-lived pullbacks, allowing for more reliable trend-following trades.
Functionality:
End-of-Day Analysis:
The indicator scans for both breakout (buy) and breakdown (sell) setups based on the close of the trading day at 4:00 PM EST on a daily chart. The long setups are marked on the chart with a green upward label and a dotted line pointing to the expected sell target level. Although it can be applied to any intraday timeframe, the indicator waits until the end of the regular session before generating new signals.
Buy (Long) Setup Identification:
When a buy setup is detected, the indicator calculates and marks a target level for a potential exit (sell target) at a higher price.
In approximately 70% of cases, a minor pullback occurs shortly after the buy setup is signaled, so immediate entry is generally not recommended.
Suggested Entry: Wait for a breakout above the recent high (indicated on the chart as “Buy over” label), which the indicator prints as the breakout level. Break over this level confirms continued upward momentum.
Short (Sell) Setup Identification:
The indicator also identifies short setups, which signal the potential for continued downward movement. Short setups are detected at the close of the trading day (4:00 PM EST) and marked on the chart with a red downward label and a dotted line pointing to the expected target level.
Similar to buy setups, going short immediately after the setup appears can be risky. In about 70% of cases, the market experiences a brief pullback or “shakeout” shortly after a short signal is issued.
Suggested Entry: Rather than entering immediately, wait for a breakdown below the recent low (indicated as “Short under” label on the chart), confirming a stronger downward move. This breakdown level is printed by the indicator to guide the entry.
Target Levels:
For both long and short setups, the indicator calculates and displays a target level, marking a potential exit point to capture profits once the price moves favorably.

When you go long over a breakout level you should consider a probable scenario when that attempt could fail. That means once price breaks over and you go long you should set a protective stop under the low of the breakout candle.
Remember, a failed attempt to breakout is normally followed by a strong bearish reaction.
