The result is a volume profile that maps exactly to the swing structure, not to arbitrary time intervals. Most volume profile tools on TradingView are session-based or fixed-period — they split time into equal windows (daily, weekly, or N-bar segments) and build a profile for each. This means a single profile can contain parts of two different swing legs going in opposite directions, mixing bullish and bearish volume into one distribution. The POC and Value Area from such profiles reflect the time window, not the price structure. This indicator solves that by anchoring each profile to the actual swing structure: a profile starts at one pivot (swing high or swing low) and ends at the next. Every bar within that swing leg contributes its volume to the bins of that specific leg. The POC tells you where the most trading occurred during that exact directional move. The Value Area shows the 70% concentration zone for that move. The delta profile shows which bins were buy-dominant vs sell-dominant within that leg. This structural anchoring makes the volume data directly relevant to the swing you're analyzing. 🧩 WHY THESE COMPONENTS WORK TOGETHER A volume profile alone tells you where trading concentrated — but without structural context, you don't know whether that concentration happened during an impulse or a correction. A swing detector alone tells you direction changed — but without volume data, you don't know whether the reversal had participation behind it. This indicator connects them into a single analytical unit: Pivot detection → Swing leg identification → Candle-range volume distribution → POC/VA/VWAP/Delta calculation → Structural visualization The swing detector (ta.pivothigh/pivotlow) defines the boundaries of each leg. The volume distribution engine allocates each candle's volume to the correct price bins based on the candle's actual range overlap (not just its close). The POC identifies the price where the market spent the most effort during that specific move. The Value Area defines the consensus price zone. The delta shows whether buyers or sellers dominated at each price level. And the swing VWAP gives the fair value for the entire move. Together, these components answer: "during this specific swing move, where did the market agree on value, and who was in control?" 🔍 WHAT MAKES IT ORIGINAL 1️⃣ Candle-range volume distribution (TPO-like allocation). Standard volume profiles assign each candle's entire volume to a single bin (usually the close price). This creates distortion: a wide-range candle that spans 10 bins puts all its volume in one, leaving 9 bins empty. This indicator distributes volume proportionally: For each candle, for each bin: overlap = max(0, min(candle_high, bin_high) − max(candle_low, bin_low)) portion = overlap / candle_range allocated_volume = candle_volume × portion A candle spanning 5 bins distributes its volume across all 5, weighted by how much of its range falls within each bin. This produces a smooth, accurate volume distribution that reflects where the market actually traded within each candle, not just where it closed. Additionally, each candle is classified as bullish (close ≥ open) or bearish (close < open), and its allocated volume is tracked separately in buy and sell arrays. This enables the delta profile: at every price bin, you can see whether buy or sell volume dominated. 2️⃣ Swing-anchored profiles (not time-anchored). Profiles are built between confirmed pivot highs and pivot lows detected by ta.pivothigh(high, swingLen, swingLen) and ta.pivotlow(low, swingLen, swingLen). Each completed swing leg (from one pivot to the next) becomes its own volume profile with independent POC, Value Area, delta, and VWAP. The bins span the exact swing range (min to max price within the leg), and only bars within the leg contribute volume. A noise filter skips swings smaller than 0.3× ATR(200) — preventing micro-swings from generating meaningless profiles. 3️⃣ Value Area calculation using the CME expansion method. The Value Area is computed using the standard market profile algorithm: starting from the POC bin, expand alternately upward and downward, adding whichever adjacent bin has more volume, until 70% of total swing volume is captured. In code: starting with accumulated = volume , the algorithm compares volume vs volume . If the upper bin has more volume (or equal), it expands upward and adds that volume. Otherwise, it expands downward. This continues until accumulated ≥ totalVolume × 0.70. The result is VA High (top of the uppermost included bin) and VA Low (bottom of the lowermost included bin). This is the same expansion method used by the CME for market profile — it's not a simple percentile calculation. The VA wraps around the POC in the direction of volume concentration, which may be asymmetric. 4️⃣ POC zone with persistent extension. The POC is not just a single line — it includes the full price bin (top and bottom boundaries) displayed as a shaded zone. This zone extends rightward from the end of the swing leg until the next profile appears, providing a forward-looking support/resistance reference. When a new swing completes, the previous POC zone is trimmed to the boundary of the new profile, and the new zone begins extending. This means you always see the most recent POC zone extending into current price action — if price is trading within the POC zone, it's at the highest-volume price of the last completed swing. If price breaks above/below the zone, it's leaving the area of strongest volume consensus. 5️⃣ Buy/sell delta profile. When enabled, each profile bin is colored by its buy/sell imbalance: green if buy volume ≥ sell volume, red if sell volume dominates. A bullish swing with mostly green bins confirms strong demand throughout the move. A bullish swing with red bins at the top suggests sellers are absorbing the advance — potential exhaustion. This buy/sell classification is based on candle direction (close ≥ open = buy candle), applied proportionally through the same distribution mechanism as total volume. 6️⃣ Swing VWAP per leg. A separate VWAP is calculated for each swing leg: sum(typical_price × volume) / sum(volume), where typical_price = (high + low + close) / 3 for each bar within the leg. This gives the volume-weighted fair value for that specific move — distinct from session VWAP or rolling VWAP. If price retests a previous swing VWAP, it's returning to the average traded price of that move. 7️⃣ Dual visualization modes: histogram profile + heatmap. Two display modes for the volume distribution: — Profile mode (default): horizontal histogram bars extending from the swing boundary, with a polyline outline. Width proportional to volume at each bin. The highest-volume bin (POC) is highlighted. — Heatmap mode : fills the entire swing range with color-gradient boxes. Higher volume = more opaque/saturated color. Lower volume = more transparent. This gives a density map of where volume concentrated within the swing. Both modes support delta coloring. The profile mode includes volume text on the POC bin. 8️⃣ Real-time forming swing profile. The indicator doesn't wait for a swing to complete — it continuously builds a profile for the current forming swing leg. As each new bar adds volume, the real-time profile updates: bins are recalculated, POC may shift, Value Area may expand. This profile is drawn in a neutral color (gray) to distinguish it from confirmed profiles. When the swing completes (next pivot confirmed), the real-time profile is replaced by the finalized historical profile in the swing's directional color. 9️⃣ Comprehensive tooltip data on swing labels. Each swing pivot label (▲ for bullish, ▼ for bearish) contains a tooltip with complete swing statistics: total volume, buy volume, sell volume, delta percentage, POC price, Value Area range, and swing VWAP. This compresses all the analytical data into a single hover interaction — you can quickly review any historical swing's volume profile data without cluttering the chart. ⚙️ HOW IT WORKS — CALCULATION FLOW Step 1 — Swing detection: ta.pivothigh(high, swingLen, swingLen) and ta.pivotlow(low, swingLen, swingLen) detect confirmed pivots. Pivots are confirmed swingLen bars after they form. Direction flips when a new pivot type appears (swing high → bearish direction, swing low → bullish direction). Step 2 — Swing leg boundaries: When direction flips, the completed leg is defined from the previous pivot index to the current pivot index. The swing range (top − bottom) is divided into N bins (default 20). A noise filter requires swing range > 0.3× ATR(200). Step 3 — Volume distribution: For each bar in the leg, the candle's volume is distributed across bins proportional to range overlap. Buy/sell arrays track bullish vs bearish candle volume separately. Typical price × volume is accumulated for VWAP. Step 4 — POC: The bin with the highest total volume is identified. Its center price becomes POC, and its upper/lower boundaries define the POC zone. Step 5 — Value Area: Starting from the POC bin, expand alternately toward the bin with more volume (up or down) until 70% of total swing volume is accumulated. Volume Profile Skew [BackQuant]Volume Profile Skew Overview Volume Profile Skew is a market-structure indicator that answers a specific question most volume profiles do not: “Is volume concentrating toward lower prices (accumulation) or higher prices (distribution) inside the current profile range?” A standard volume profile shows where volume traded, but it does not quantify the shape of that distribution in a single number. This script builds a volume profile over a rolling lookback window, extracts the key profile levels (POC, VAH, VAL, and a volume-weighted mean), then computes the skewness of the volume distribution across price bins. That skewness becomes an oscillator, smoothed into a regime signal and paired with visual profile plotting, key level lines, and historical POC tracking. This gives you two layers at once: A full profile and its important levels (where volume is). A skew metric (how volume is leaning within that range). What this indicator is based on The foundation comes from classical “volume at price” concepts used in Market Profile and Volume Profile analysis: POC (Point of Control): the price level with the highest traded volume. Value Area (VAH/VAL): the zone containing the bulk of activity, commonly 70% of total volume. Volume-weighted mean (VWMP in this script): the average price weighted by volume, a “center of mass” for traded activity. Where this indicator extends the idea is by treating the volume profile as a statistical distribution across price. Once you treat “volume by price bin” as a probability distribution (weights sum to 1), you can compute distribution moments: Mean: where the mass is centered. Standard deviation: how spread-out it is. Skewness: whether the distribution has a heavier tail toward higher or lower prices. This is not a gimmick. Skewness is a standard statistic in probability theory. Here it is applied to “volume concentration across price”, not to returns. Core concept: what “skew” means in a volume profile Imagine a profile range from Low to High, split into bins. Each bin has some volume. You can get these shapes: Balanced profile: volume is fairly symmetric around the mean, skew near 0. Bottom-heavy profile: more volume at lower prices, with a tail toward higher prices, skew tends to be positive. Top-heavy profile: more volume at higher prices, with a tail toward lower prices, skew tends to be negative. In this script: Positive skew is labeled as ACCUMULATION. Negative skew is labeled as DISTRIBUTION. Near-zero skew is NEUTRAL. Important: accumulation here does not mean “buying will immediately pump price.” It means the profile shape suggests more participation at lower prices inside the current lookback range. Distribution means participation is heavier at higher prices. How the volume profile is built 1) Define the analysis window The profile is computed on a rolling window: Lookback Period: number of bars included (capped by available history). Profile Resolution (bins): number of price bins used to discretize the high-low range. The script finds the highest high and lowest low in the lookback window to define the price range: rangeHigh = highest high in window rangeLow = lowest low in window binSize = (rangeHigh - rangeLow) / bins 2) Create bin midpoints Each bin gets a midpoint “price” used for calculations: price = rangeLow + binSize * (b + 0.5) These midpoints are what the mean, variance, and skewness are computed on. 3) Distribute each candle’s volume into bins This is a key implementation detail. Real volume profiles require tick-level data, but Pine does not provide that. So the script approximates volume-at-price using candle ranges: For each bar in the lookback: Determine which bins its low-to-high range touches. Split that candle’s total volume evenly across the touched bins. So if a candle spans 6 bins, each bin gets volume/6 from that bar. This is a practical, consistent approximation for “where trading could have occurred” inside the bar. This approach has tradeoffs: It does not know where within the candle the volume truly traded. It assumes uniform distribution across the candle range. It becomes more meaningful with larger samples (bigger lookback) and/or higher timeframes. But it is still useful because the purpose here is the shape of the distribution across the whole window, not exact microstructure. Key profile levels: POC, VAH, VAL, VWMP POC (Point of Control) POC is found by scanning bins and selecting the bin with maximum volume. The script stores: pocIndex: which bin has max volume poc price: midpoint price of that bin Value Area (VAH/VAL) using 70% volume The script builds the value area around the POC outward until it captures 70% of total volume: Start with the POC bin. Expand one bin at a time to the side with more volume. Stop when accumulated volume >= 70% of total profile volume. Then: VAL = rangeLow + binSize * lowerIdx VAH = rangeLow + binSize * (upperIdx + 1) This produces a classic “where most business happened” zone. VWMP (Volume-Weighted Mean Price) This is essentially the center of mass of the profile: VWMP = sum(price * volume ) / totalVolume It is similar in spirit to VWAP, but it is computed over the profile bins, not from bar-by-bar typical price. Skewness calculation: turning the profile into an oscillator This is the main feature. 1) Treat volumes as weights For each bin: weight = volume / totalVolume Now weights sum to 1. 2) Compute weighted mean Mean price: mean = sum(weight * price ) 3) Compute weighted variance and std deviation Variance: variance = sum(weight * (price - mean)^2) stdDev = sqrt(variance) 4) Compute weighted third central moment Third moment: m3 = sum(weight * (price - mean)^3) 5) Standardize to skewness Skewness: rawSkew = m3 / (stdDev^3) This standardization matters. How this script records POCs It stores a new historical POC when: At least updatebars have passed since the last stored POC, and The POC has changed by at least pochangethres (%) from the last stored value. New stored POCs are flagged as naked by default. How naked becomes tested On each update, the script checks whether price has entered a small zone around a naked POC: zoneSize = POC * 0.002 (about 0.2%) If bar range overlaps that zone, mark it as tested (not naked). Display controls: Highlight Naked POCs: draws and labels untested POCs. Show Tested POCs: optionally draw tested ones in a muted color. The hypothesis here is you build trade ideas based on zigzags but then use the volume profiles. Pivot Legs (Left/Right): The amount of bars a high or a low needs to be higher/lower than to the left and right of the bar. 10 By default to create medium term zigzag 🔹Volume Profile Profile Rows: The amount of rows in Y axis the zigzag is going to be sliced into to create the volume profile. Higher number is more detailed volume profile but also uses more box objects which is maxed at 500. 25 by default Profiles to Display: The amount of volume profiles the indicator will draw back in time. Volume essential parameters overlayVolume EPO – Essential Volume Parameters Overlay 1. Motivation and design philosophy Volume EPO is designed as a conceptual overlay rather than a self contained trading system. The main idea behind this script is to take complex, foundational market concepts out of heavy, menu driven strategies and express them as lightweight, independent layers that sit on top of any chart or indicator. In many TradingView scripts, a single strategy tries to handle everything at once: signal logic, risk settings, visual cues, multi timeframe controls, and conceptual explanations. This usually leads to long input menus, performance issues, and difficult maintenance. The architectural approach behind Volume EPO is the opposite: keep the core strategy lean, and move the explanation and measurement of key concepts into dedicated overlays. In this framework, Volume EPO is the base layer for the concept of volume. It does not decide anything about entries or exits. Instead, it exposes and clarifies how different definitions of volume behave candle by candle. Other layers or strategies can then build on top of this understanding. 2. What Volume EPO does Volume EPO focuses on four essential volume parameters for each bar: - Buy volume - Sell volume - Total volume - Delta volume (the difference between buy and sell volume) The script presents these parameters in a compact heads up display (HUD) table that can be positioned anywhere on the chart. It is designed to be visually minimal, language aware, and usable on top of any other indicator or price action without cluttering the view. The indicator does not output signals, alerts, arrows, or strategy entries. It is a descriptive and educational tool that shows how volume is distributed, not a prescriptive tool that tells the trader what to do. 3. Two definitions of volume A central theme of this script is that there is more than one way to define and interpret “volume” inside a single candle. Volume EPO implements and clearly separates two different approaches: - A geometric, candle based approximation that uses only OHLC and volume of the current bar. - An intrabar, data driven definition that uses lower timeframe up and down volume when it is available. The user can switch between these modes via the calculation method input. The mode is prominently shown inside the on chart table so that the context is always explicit. 3.1 Geometry mode (Source File, approximate) In Geometry mode, Volume EPO works only with the current bar’s OHLC values and total volume. No lower timeframe data is required. The candle’s range is defined as high minus low. If the range is positive, the position of the close inside that range is used as a simple model for how volume might have been distributed between buyers and sellers: - The closer the close is to the high, the more of the total volume is attributed to the buying side. - The closer the close is to the low, the more of the total volume is attributed to the selling side. - In a rare case where the bar has no price range (for example a flat or doji bar), total volume is split evenly between buy and sell volume. From this model, the script derives: - Buy volume (approximated) - Sell volume (approximated) - Total volume (as reported by the bar) - Delta volume as the difference between buy and sell volume This approach is intentionally labeled as “Geometry (Approx)” in the HUD. It is a theoretical reconstruction based solely on the candle’s geometry and total volume, and it is always available on any market or timeframe that provides OHLCV data. 3.2 Intrabar mode (Precise) In Intrabar mode, Volume EPO uses the TradingView built in library for up and down volume on a user selected lower timeframe. Instead of inferring volume from the shape of the candle, it reads the underlying lower timeframe data when that data is accessible. The script requests up and down volume from a lower timeframe such as 15 seconds, using the official TA library functions. The results are then interpreted as follows: - Buy volume is taken as the absolute value of the up volume. - Sell volume is taken as the absolute value of the down volume. - Total volume is the sum of buy and sell volume. - Delta volume is provided directly by the library as the difference between up and down volume. If valid lower timeframe data exists for a bar, the bar is counted as covered by Intrabar data. If not, that bar is marked as invalid for this precise calculation and is excluded from the covered count. This mode is labeled “Precise” in the HUD, together with the selected lower timeframe, because it is anchored in actual intrabar data rather than in a geometric model. It provides a closer view of how buying and selling pressure unfolded inside the bar, at the cost of requiring more data and being dependent on the availability of that data. 4. Coverage, lookback, and what the numbers mean The top part of the HUD reports not only which volume definition is active, but also an additional line that describes the effective coverage of the data. In Intrabar (Precise) mode, the script displays: - “Scanned: N Bars” Here, N counts how many bars since the indicator was loaded have successfully received valid lower timeframe delta data. It is a measure of how much of the visible history has been truly covered by intrabar information, not a lookback window in the sense of a rolling calculation. In Geometry mode, the script displays: - “Lookback: L Bars” In this extracted layer, the lookback value L is purely descriptive. It does not change how the current bar’s volume is computed, and it is not used in any iterative or statistical calculation inside this script. It is meant as a conceptual label, for example to keep the volume layer consistent with a broader framework where lookback length is a structural parameter. Summarizing these two fields: - Scanned tells you how many bars have been processed using real intrabar data. - Lookback is a descriptive parameter in Geometry mode in this specific overlay, not a direct driver of the computations. 5. The HUD layout on the chart The on chart table is intentionally compact and structured to be read quickly: - Header: a title identifying the overlay as Volume EPO. - Mode line: explicitly states whether the script is in Precise or Geometry mode, and for Precise mode also shows the lower timeframe used. - Coverage line: - In Precise mode, it shows “Scanned: N Bars”. - In Geometry mode, it shows “Lookback: L Bars”. - Volume block: - A line for buy and sell volume, marked with clear directional symbols. - A line for total volume and the absolute delta, accompanied by the sign of the delta. - Numeric formatting uses human friendly suffixes (for example K, M, B) to keep the display readable. - Footer: the current symbol and a time stamp, adjusted by a user selectable timezone offset so that the HUD can be aligned with the trader’s local time reference. The table can be positioned anywhere on the chart and resized via inputs, and it supports multiple color themes and languages in order to integrate cleanly into different chart layouts. 6. How to use Volume EPO in practice Volume EPO is meant to be read together with price action and other tools, not in isolation. Typical uses include: - Studying how often a strong directional candle is actually supported by dominant buy or sell volume. - Comparing the behavior of delta volume between Geometry and Intrabar definitions. - Building a personal intuition for how intrabar data refines or contradicts the simple candle based approximation. - Feeding these insights into separate, lean strategy scripts that do not need to carry the full explanatory logic of volume inside them. Because it is an overlay layer, Volume EPO can be stacked with other custom indicators without adding new signals or complexity to their logic. It simply adds a clear and consistent view of volume behavior on top of whatever the trader is already watching. 7. Educational and non signalling nature Finally, it is important to stress that Volume EPO is not a trading system, not a signal generator, and not financial advice. The script does not tell the user when to enter or exit. It only reports how different definitions of volume describe the current bar. Deciding whether to trade, how to trade, and which risk parameters to use remains entirely with the user and with their own strategy. Volume EPO provides context and clarity around the concept of volume so that those decisions can be informed by a better understanding of how buying and selling pressure is structured inside each candle. Note: Even on lower timeframes, every reconstruction of volume remains an approximation, except at the true single tick level. However, the closer the chosen lower timeframe is to a one tick stream, the more accurately it can reflect the underlying order flow and balance between buying and selling pressure.
